  1. It’s been a while since I’ve seen this film, but I remember being surprised at just how much Matthau took it over. He’s such a hilarious, cynical grump. I think you’re right about Lemmon stepping back a little bit, but I also think he is the film’s heart, along with Ron Rich. Great write-up, Leah!

  2. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau are one of the finest double acts in cinematic history . The duo of Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond is comedy made perfect. The Fortune Cookie is a story that is still sharp, funny and contemporary 48 years down the line.But chiefly as Lemmon and Matthau’s first outing together it is indispensable.

    I like what you said about Lemmon’s generosity. I’d never really thought about it before, but you’re right. He is a very generous actor.
