Read your blog. Saw the movie yesterday. In total agreement with you. But I am a huge Eastwood fan so I knew it would be good. PWH is genius. I hope he does get a nod.

We’re in such agreement here! The treatment of Scruggs is upsetting, but otherwise the film hews unusually closely to fact. It – and Hauser’s performance – are heartbreaking. And I couldn’t agree more about The Irishman – shockingly dull with no character arc at all. How is Joe Pesci nominated and Sam Rockwell wasn’t even in the hunt? Preposterous.

    • I agree completely with everything you’ve written! I didn’t go into Rockwell’s performance in detail here, but it was subtle and moving. Pesci’s seemed quite one note to me. Just to dial his usual over-the-top characterizations down doesn’t merit a nomination. I felt like I knew Rockwell’s character. I looked up the man he was playing, and think he really nailed his personality. Richard Jewell’s acting was better than the Irishman’s across the board, but I think it’s mainly because, as you say, there were no character arcs for anyone in The Irishman. Only Pacino stood out to me, probably because his charisma seemed to echo Hoffa’s. Maybe when you base an entire movie on a lie, it’s hard to create fully realized characters out of it.
