Many of you vaguely know her name from the Blazing Saddles spoof of it. (Remember Hedley, played by Harvey Korman?) Others may remember that she made a scandalous entry into film, or that she simply had one of the loveliest faces ever to appear on screen. But today Google Doodle is celebrating the gorgeous Hedy Lamarr for her WWII invention, an honor preceded, of course, by a far more notable one from the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Her ideas may have been under-appreciated in her time. (Admittedly, those rockstar looks ARE distracting.)
But today you can thank her for the WiFi you’re using to read this post. Happy Birthday to the late Lamarr, whose genius has made life easier for us all.

Hard to believe, the films seem so long ago – but these days Lamarr could easily still be alive.

Yes, many people do live into their 100s now. de Havilland is still alive at 99!
