I remember, I must have been twelve , seeing this movie as I have seen most… not in the theater. I hadn’t seen Girl Friday and so on yet. I loved it. There was always something in the back of mind about it. Oh yes it’s her. As you said her career up to that point, I was younger but she was on my radar. Being an “above board” , “all or nothin” attitude towards my cinema. Especially a Cohen bros. film . I do think you’re being hard on her. I heard the accent and as I matured I understood the responsibility and sharp eye for talent. I think you got the “re-make flu”. One of those guys who always have to say it. In love with the original. I eventually saw what I was supposed to see.and fell in love myself, but when critiquing someone’s work , all things considered is the policy. Her wardrobe and make-up alone. I think the problem , if any, is its story isnt rushed but I get that stuffed feeling when there is just too much talent!

    • I think I saw it before I’d watched most of those classic films (if not all), and her performance still bugged me. That said, the Coens go for that affected, over-the-top language, and I usually enjoy their refusal to go for naturalism; her style could easily have been influenced by their direction. I’d just liked her so much better in other things I probably had difficulty making the adjustment. And her character wasn’t the fun one, after all–who could compete with wide-eyed Robbins? And Newman and Durning are having so much fun. You’re reminding me how much I love this film. I’ve got to watch it again….
