  1. Fabulous! I love the analytics employed here, and I agree with you. I’ve never warmed up to Max de W. and I wonder what Joan Fontaine’s character sees in him. Even so, you’ve prompted me to see this version again.

  2. Meagan

Now I need to read this again.

Do you know- has anyone done a feminist retelling from Rebecca’s POV?

    • Not that I know of. I’m hopeful about the remake in the works at Netflix, with Kristen Scott Thomas and Lily James. But my guess is that it’ll just be a new spin on Mrs. Danvers (which could be interesting too–she is cruel to the narrator, but her hatred for Max is right on target).

  3. When I read Rebecca in high school, I thought she was terrible and Max dreamy. Now I realize you’re right–it takes a lot of work to be as charming as she is, and Maxim is consistently Grumpy McGrumpypants. Not to mention the whole MURDER THING (shaking head at the high school student I was).

  4. That was a nice, fun read. I also remember not thinking Rebecca was so bad as I read the book. But Max, ew, he always seemed like an idiot to me.
    Kisses!
