  1. This made me laugh out loud. I haven’t seen the film and am not wildly inclined to put it high on my To-watch list, but I’d never have cast tiny Beckinsale as Gardner. I will say that you might lay more blame on the director, but what I most want to know is who cast her?!

Who the hell is this lousy Beckinsale Basher ?? She has had 9 award wins and 32 nominations. Yes, has one Razzie Nominee, but that was for Worst Screen Couple
Pearl Harbor (2001) Ben Affleck and EITHER Kate Beckinsale or Josh Hartnett (can you take that seriously when two straight guys are nominated as a couple ?). It sure damn was not for her role in The Aviator ! Kate’s Ava Gardner character was there to support Leonard DiCaprio’s Howard Hughes, NOT to be a biopic about Ava !! This critic’s despairing remarks on Beckinsale’s entire career makes it obvious whomever it is, they are only a Kate hater and are not fit to objectively evaluate her performance.

    • I appreciate the defense! I’ve seen her do better work elsewhere. I liked her in Cold Comfort Farm and Last Days of Disco, and thought her pretty good in Love and Friendship. I’ve never watched Pearl Harbor, but it seems like everyone was bad if Anthony Lane’s review is accurate. But I thought this performance was quite weak even on its own merits, and that she didn’t capture Ava Gardner at all.

First off, I know nothing about Ava. But I don’t think Kate’s acting here was bad. It was at least not boring…. and I think her face is actually prettier than Ava’s. And as others mentioned, this was a Hughes biopic and not an Ava biopic.

    • True, it was a Hughes biopic, and The Irishman certainly shows that Scorsese is not too worried about accurately representing true people. I’m glad you enjoyed her performance more than I did. I did like her in Cold Comfort Farm and in Love and Friendship, but I didn’t think this was her role.
